Food for Thought

I have never talked about my diet before on the blog... I am not exactly sure why since it is something that is very important to me.. but either way this will be the start of a more regular post on this issue!

I follow a modified version of the SCD diet. If you aren't familiar with this diet there are many resources online that will explain it. It is similar to the paleo diet, with a few differences. I started this way of eating about 1.5 years ago. For years I had suffered with severe "IBS" (I'll be honest. diarrhea). I had seen a GI specialist, been scoped from both ends and told that there was nothing wrong with me. Nothing wrong with me? I was running to the bathroom between 6-10 times a day. I wouldn't accept that answer. So I began looking outside of the conventional medical system for help. I found an integrative medical doctor in my area and sought his help. I had a number of tests done (some of which I don't think are very accurate now that I know more about how the testing works) but the tests did identify a parasite, bacterial overgrowth and yeast within my bowels. We treated all of these, and I went on a gluten and dairy free diet. I had some relief, but was still not "normal" by any means.

That is when he suggested I try the SCD diet. Now I had never heard of this before, so I went and bought the book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" that explains this diet. At first I was very reluctant to give up my way of eating and explore what I felt to be a very restricted diet. However, I finally decided to give myself 3 months on the diet and see if anything changed. Well it did. It was amazing!

Since then I have been following the diet religiously. I have learned that there are certain things that are "allowed" on the diet that I cannot tolerate. One of the big things I have learned about myself is that fibre and I are not friends. So I follow a lower fibre, higher fat version of the diet. Low fibre!?!? You may be screaming that low fibre is bad for you!!! We have been told this for years now. And while before I would have completely agreed with you, I have learned that the mainstream ideas behind nutrition are severely flawed. The main reason why high fibre is recommended is to help keep your bowels regular. Well I have no troubles in this regard, and high fibre causes me to have diarrhea. That's just fact. If you are prone to constipation then yes you need more fibre, but there is definitely no "one fits all" answer for food.

Now I would like to say that my bowels are perfect now. They aren't. I still have bad days once in a while but nothing like before, and much less frequently. Sometimes I can identify a trigger, other times I can't. But I would say that I am about 80% better. And for me that makes the diet totally worth it! I have also learned that this diet isn't restricting at all. If you don't believe me check out some of the paleo blogs out there. Now tell me that that food doesn't look delicious!

Here are a few of my favorite places to find recipes!

Well I think those are great places to start! I have a ton more blogs saved into my favorites online. I will share more of these as I continue these posts. I will also start to share some of my kitchen adventures and recipes!
Is anyone else out there following a paleo diet? Why did you decide to change? I am always interested in hearing peoples stories!

That's all for now. I hope everyone had a good weekend!

Fashion Focus: Rain Gear

So I have to admit that we don't get a ton of rain in Calgary... we seem to skip right past the rain to snow most of the time... but everytime the rain does come I always wish that I had some good looking rain gear
So on my hunt for some pretty water proof items I thought I would share with you some ladies who definitely know how to dress for the rain!
Enjoy!

I think it's clear I need to get myself a pair of Hunter rain boots... perhaps this pretty black pair??

As I am writing this our city has been burried under about 10cm of snow... I would give
anything for a little rain right now!

Well back to studying for my LMCC part 2... scary!!!
Stay warm everyone!

Celebrity Style Crush: Taylor Swift

I love Taylor Swift. Like love! Yes me and every other 12 year old girl that's out there...
I have liked this girl for a long time... and I am so impressed at how grounded she has stayed throughout her rise to fame. Oh Taylor.
Everytime I see her interviewed I just can't help but smile, and they way she is so good to her fans is amazing. Never mind that she is gorgeous. And so talented. And has great style. If I didn't love her so much I might hate her. But that's like trying to hate puppies... it's not possible! Well enough gushing... here are some of my favorite Taylor style momements.
Enjoy!

If I keep telling myself that enough maybe it will come true...

keep studying

So far it's just not working!
Wish me luck

All of these women sure know how to dress! I am so jealous of all these lovely ladies who get to attend fashion week... I can only hope that one day I might be so lucky!

I am currently stuck at home on "back up call" for senior medicine... hoping and praying that my pager doesn't go off so that I don't have to go into the hospital... so that is how I am spending my long weekend... what about you??
